Digital Signage Glossary

A

Administrator: The one responsible for updating and maintaining the digital signage system.

Advertisement: Marketing used to sell or promote a service or product.

Animation: A method where figures are manipulated to appear as moving images. This is usually used in digital displays.

Aspect Ratio: An image’s ratio if its width to its height.

ATM Topper: A video screen on tom of an ATM machine to display advertising.

Audience: The targeted people that will be exposed to the digital signage advertisement.

AVI: (Audio Video Interleaved). It’s a sound and motion picture that allows synchronous audio with video playback.

 

B

Background: Visual environment where the message is displayed.

Bandwidth: Rate at which data is transferred over a network connection. 

Beacons: Bluetooth connections that transmit messages to smart phones or tablets.

Branding: Your company’s identity (logo, colors, typefaces, style).

Browser: Software app used to access and navigate the internet. 

 

C

Cloud Based: Stored and managed on servers hosted on the internet.

CMS: (Content Management System). Software used to manage the creation and modification of digital content.

Content: The images, videos, graphics or sounds used in your digital display to engage or inform your audience.

 

D

Digital Signage: Digital screen displaying video or multimedia for advertising or informative purposes

Display: Screen used to show your digital signage. 

Dwell Time: Time your audience has to see and process your content.

 

E

Ethernet: Connects computers in a local area network.

 

F

Firewall: System designed to block unauthorized access to a network.

Frequency: Number of times people are exposed to your advertisement.

 

G

Graphic: A visual image, design or artwork.

 

H

Hardware: Physical elements of digital signage like the display, display mount, also if applicable a kiosk, tablets, cables, etc.

HD: High Definition.

HDMI: (High-Definition Multimedia Interface). Audio/video interface used for transferring uncompressed video and compressed digital audio data from an HDMI compatible display controller to a monitor, projector, tv or digital device.

HTML: (HyperText Markup Language). Standard markup language for documents to be displayed as webpages.

 

I

IP Address: Internet Protocol Address. Numerical value assigned to each device in a network.

 

J

JPEG: The most common compression technique used for images shared in the internet.

 

L

LAN: (Local Area Network). Computer network that interconnects computers within a limited area such as a residence, school, or small office. Ethernet and WiFi are common transmission technologies used for LAN networks.

Layout: Arrangement of the content displayed to capture your audience’s attention. 

LED Display: (Light-Emitting Diode). A flat panel display that uses light-emitting diodes as pixels for video display.

Loop: Repeating your advertisiment for continuous play.

M

Media Assets: Also known as media file.

Media Player: Device that plays digital signage content on any public digital display.

MOV: File extension for videos and other multimedia developed by Apple for QuickTime Player.

 

N

Network: A group of two or more computer systems linked together.

 

O

Orientation: The way the display is shown, either landscape or portrait.

OTS: (Opportunity To See). Probability of a screen being viewed by consumers.

 

P

Playlist: Order of content that will be displayed in a given schedule.

Point of Purchase (POP): Digital display or any type of advertising located near a payment point.

Point of Sale (POS): Place where a transaction takes place.

 

Q

QR Code: (Quick Response Code). A type of barcode that can be scanned by smarthpones and show a landing page for a website.

 

R

Resolution: Amount of pixels in each dimension that can be displayed.

RGB: Red, green and blue. Colors used in a computer screen.

 

S

SaaS: (Software as a service). A software license based on a subscription basis.

Server: A computer system that allows for client software to be run on other computers.

Server Hosting: Remote access to server resources.

Software: Instructions that direct a computer to perform specific tasks or operations (what makes your digital signage run).

Streaming: Content delivered live over the Internet.

 

T

Target Audience: The desired consumer for a service or product.

Template: A pre-designed layout that you can use for your advertisement.

Ticker: Continuously moving content on your display.

 

U

URL: (Uniform Resource Locator). Also known as web address.

User: A person using the digital signage system.

 

V

Video Wall: A wall with several monitors or displays arranged together to look like a single big display.

VPN: (Virtual Private Network). It extends a private network to a public network, such as the Internet. 

 

W

WAV: Digital audio file extension.

Wayfinding: Directional signage. A way of giving directions step by step.

Web-based: A client-server software application where the client runs the application from the web.

Widget: Application that lets a user access a service or perform a function.

 

Z

Zip: Data compression format that can contain multiple compressed files.
